THE PROBLEM
Owners of selective or reactive dogs often struggle to find safe, compatible playmates. Existing dog-social apps require users to build new profiles, trust unfamiliar owners and join another low-density marketplace.
THE PRODUCT DECISION
Instead of creating another standalone app, I explored the experience inside Rover—where dog profiles, owner identities, reviews, location data and an existing trust layer already exist.
THE SOLUTION
Rover Playdate helps owners understand compatibility, review potential concerns and move from discovering a match to confidently planning a meetup.
Understanding the Problem
I started with a pet-dating concept, assuming that dog ownership could help people connect.
But interviews and secondary research repeatedly surfaced a different problem: owners—especially those with selective or reactive dogs—had difficulty finding playmates whose temperament, size and energy level were actually compatible.
That insight changed both the audience and the product direction.

The best product decision was not building another standalone app — it was choosing where the product should live.
User Persona
Alex, 29 — hybrid schedule, one-bedroom apartment, one dog-selective Shiba Inu named Mochi.
Mochi isn't aggressive, she's particular — she needs a calm, unhurried introduction with a dog whose energy won't overwhelm her. Alex isn't after quantity. She wants one or two dogs Mochi consistently does well with, and enough information to judge a match before she shows up, so she isn't gambling an afternoon on the wrong dog.

Standalone vs Rover
Why the feature worked better inside an existing platform.
Standalone dog-socialization apps (DogHood, Sniffspot, Meetup groups) all fight the same problem: density. Matching only works where enough of the right people are already gathered — reviews of live dog-meetup apps are full of the failure mode, a handful of users within fifty miles, owners giving up.
Rover already has that density. It holds profiles, trust, payment, and location data for millions of pet parents — the exact ingredients a new app spends years trying to assemble. Rover has even recommended a third-party dog-community app to its own users, a sign it senses the gap without having built for it yet.


The opportunity was not building another destination — it was using the right ecosystem.

It doesn't stop at a match. It suggests a time, a neutral first-meeting spot, and why that spot works.

A good playdate depends on both behavioral fit and real-world fit.
How I Worked
I used Claude to organize competitive research and pressure-test my own reasoning — the read on what the research meant (playdates, not dating) was mine. Claude Design generated visual directions quickly for the compatibility reveal screen; choosing which direction actually fit Rover, rebuilding it in Figma, correcting the palette, and rewriting the copy was the design judgment underneath it. The tools compressed time between a decision and seeing it rendered — they didn't make the decision.

Reflections & Learnings
This is a concept, not a shipped feature, so the honest next step is validation. I'd want to test whether owners trust the compatibility explanation, and what information they need before requesting a playdate — a think-aloud session with five owners on the reveal screen would answer most of that fast. The other open question is density: matches only work if enough nearby owners turn the feature on, which points toward a city-by-city rollout in Rover's strongest markets rather than a single launch.
The bigger lesson carried across the whole project: instead of building a new app for a need that real apps kept failing to serve, look for the place that need can already be met, and build the smallest thing that meets it.
